Waterguide – Aqua purificata
What is Aqua purificata?
Aqua purificata is Latin for "purified water". It is water that has been cleaned of impurities through various purification processes to make it suitable for pharmaceutical or laboratory applications. As a raw material for numerous production processes, it is usually produced on site. The starting material is drinking water.
Specifications regarding microbacterial purity can be found for example in the European Pharmacopoeia (Pharmacopoeia Europaea, Ph. Eur.). A distinction is made between these water qualities:
- Purified water (aqua purificata),
- water for injections / WFI (aqua ad injectabilia),
- water for diluting concentrated haemodialysis solutions and
- water for the preparation of extracts.
In the pharmaceutical industry, aqua purificata is used as a starting material to produce medicines.
