A modern industrial water treatment facility with solar panels and wind turbines supports green hydrogen production.

Electrolysis Water Treatment for Hydrogen

Efficient production with minimal water consumption

Green hydrogen - produced using the electrolysis of water with renewable energy - is a key cornerstone on the road to climate neutrality. To achieve this, Europe is currently following ambitious plans to expand production capacities and infrastructure. The challenge is to establish a clean hydrogen production while at the same time conserving water resources.

Long-term planning security
Herco offers you a reliable supply of ultrapure water in consistent quality for electrolysis and at the same time minimises water and energy consumption in water treatment.

Sustainable solutions for electrolysis

At our site in Freiberg am Neckar, we develop and manufacture high-quality water treatment systems for pilot projects, large-scale projects and mobile container solutions. Thanks to our decades of experience in water treatment, we guarantee fast and worriless installation on site. We rely on particularly durable systems.

Top quality is sustainable
In the production process, an optimised technical design extends the service life of the electrolyser. We offer future-proof water treatment which also significantly reduces your operating costs (more on operational expenditures - OPEX) using pumps with frequency converters and an integrated concentrate stage.

High purity water extends the life of the electrolyser

"Foreign ions in the water such as iron reduce the cathode activity and thus reduce the performance of the electrolyser. At the same time, copper can increase membrane resistance."

Colours of hydrogen

Although hydrogen is a colourless and odourless gas, different colours appear around the future of energy production. The reason for this is that hydrogen is given different names depending on how it is produced.

Questions and answers on the subject of water treatment and electrolysis

What is the connection between water treatment and electrolysis?

During electrolysis, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. Precisely defined water quality is required for the process to run efficiently and safely. Water treatment ensures that dissolved salts, particles and organic substances are removed in order to extend the service life of the electrolysis cells and minimise energy consumption.

Which treatment steps are necessary before electrolysis?

Typically, several processes are used - such as filtration, softening, reverse osmosis and EDI (electrodeionisation). This combination ensures that the feed water fulfils the high quality requirements for electrolysis. Herco develops modular and compact systems that are precisely customised to the respective process.

How does efficient water treatment contribute to the economic efficiency of electrolysis?

An optimised water circuit reduces maintenance work, minimises downtimes and lowers operating costs. In addition, the energy required for electrolysis is reduced, as pure electrolytes have a higher conductivity and the process is therefore more efficient.

Why is water quality so important for hydrogen production?

Impurities in the water can damage the electrolyser and significantly reduce the hydrogen yield. High-quality water treatment protects the electrolysis system from deposits and corrosion and ensures the constant production of high-purity hydrogen.

What are the advantages of hydrogen processing with Herco?

Herco offers customised systems for hydrogen processing with high operational reliability and a long service life. Thanks to space-saving containerised construction and efficient system design, sustainable solutions are created for reliable hydrogen production.
