Data centres are expected to process more and more data in less and less time, while also increasing energy efficiency as far as possible with an eye towards sustainability. A large portion of energy consumption is due to the need for cooling. Therefore, a well-designed cooling system – one which is adapted to the climatic conditions at the site and is as safe as possible thanks to sufficient redundancy – is an important prerequisite for smooth operation of a data centre.
An efficient cooling system is able to significantly increase the energy efficiency, or power usage effectiveness (PUE), of a data centre, ensuring that operating costs are minimised.
There are many ways to design a cooling system, from entirely direct or indirect free cooling and adiabatic cooling to direct water cooling of a number of components. In virtually all of these cases, water is used as a heat transfer medium in at least a portion of the cooling circuits.
Our water treatment units are designed to meet the needs of data centres. They are characterised by reliable operation with low maintenance frequency. We place great importance on resource efficiency, which can be seen in the consistently low energy and water consumption and the long service life of our units.
Data centres operate with a high computer density and generate a great deal of heat, which must be dissipated reliably. Water is used as a heat transfer medium for many cooling systems. Ultrapure water in the data centre prevents corrosion and deposits, ensures constant heat transfer, reduces maintenance costs and contributes to increasing the operational reliability and service life of the installations.
A large proportion of a data centre's energy consumption is used for cooling. Efficient cooling systems - e.g. direct or indirect free cooling, adiabatic cooling or water cooling circuits - are crucial for optimising power usage effectiveness (PUE). High-quality water treatment is necessary for these systems to function optimally and permanently.
Herco utilises proven processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), appropriate pre-treatment, filtration and, if necessary, redundant solutions. The systems are dimensioned to meet high requirements - both in terms of performance and reliability.
Optimised cooling systems with high-quality water allow the cooling system (data centre) to work more efficiently, which reduces overall energy consumption. At the same time, good treatment reduces the use of chemicals and cuts maintenance and servicing costs. Together, these effects improve efficiency and reduce operating costs over the service life of the system.
