Water for milk processing must fulfil the highest hygiene requirements. Herco systems deliver consistently demineralised water of reliable quality - ideal for product contact, CIP systems (dairy) and packaging processes. As a full-service partner, Herco ensures precise documentation, traceability as well as customised design and support for your water treatment solution - and offers an excellent spare parts service.

Resource efficiency in the dairy industry

Our systems minimise water consumption and increase energy efficiency - through recovery, heat recirculation and demand-based controlling. As a full-service provider, Herco offers solutions that ideally combine operational reliability, sustainability and customised technology for your dairy processes.

Dairy reference project
Up to 90 % permeate yield compared to fresh water use

In order to optimise water consumption, a dairy in Finland has selected a compact reverse osmosis system from Herco. The integrated concentrate recovery stage achieves a permeate yield of 90 %.

Project requirement

The Valio dairy in Finland was seeking a reliable and resource-saving solution for treating surface water. The aim was to provide fully demineralised water for cleaning the production facilities. Due to the limited space available in the technical facilities, the system had to have a particularly compact design. In addition, a high level of energy efficiency was required in order to reduce operating costs in the long term.

Herco solution

Herco has developed a space-saving, compact reverse osmosis system with an integrated hygienic design. The system achieves a permeate yield of up to 90 % due to the concentrate recovery stage (2× 12.5 m³/h). The use of frequency-controlled pumps reduces energy consumption by up to 50 %. The Siemens S7 control system with Profinet interface enables seamless integration into the higher-level control system and ensures largely automated operation with minimal operating effort.

System technology

  • Source: surface water

  • Capacity: 2× 50 m³/h in alternating operation

  • Concentrate recovery: 2× 12,5 m³/h

  • Material: completely stainless steel, low dead space design (hygienic design)

  • Control system: Siemens S7 with Profinet

  • Chemical dosing

  • CIP tank, hot sterilisable

  • Frequency-controlled pumps (FU)

  • Interfaces for ZLT connection

  • Blending device for hardness adjustment

Amortisation period from 1 year compared to single-stage UO systems.
Up to 50 % energy savings through the use of frequency converter pumps.
Up to 90 % permeate yield compared to the use of fresh water.

Water treament for dairy: Questions & answers

Why is water treatment so important in dairies?

Water is a key element in milk processing. Water of a defined quality is required for cleaning processes, steam generation or product contact. Reliable water treatment ensures hygienic safety, consistent product quality and compliance with legal requirements.

Which requirements does the dairy industry place on water quality?

Dairies require process water with different quality requirements - such as ultrapure water for cleaning cycles (CIP), soft water for steam generation or microbiologically safe water for cleaning systems. Herco supplies solutions that are precisely tailored to these requirements.

Which technologies are used for water treatment in dairies?

The most common processes are reverse osmosis and disinfection. Herco combines these technologies to create modular, energy-efficient systems that are specially designed to meet the needs of the dairy industry.

How can a Herco system reduce operating costs in the dairy?

With an optimised system design, low rinsing water volumes and energy-efficient components, our water treatment systems reduce resource consumption (including dairy process water, dairy product water). This reduces operating costs and improves the environmental footprint of your production.

Are the Herco systems designed in accordance with hygiene requirements?

Yes. Our systems for dairies comply with hygienic design and are engineered for operation in sensitive production areas. They can be fully documented and integrated into existing quality assurance systems.

Which standards and guidelines does Herco fulfil for water treatment for dairies?

Our systems comply with relevant industry standards such as DIN 19650 for drinking water hygiene and other food law requirements. We can also realise customer-specific certification requirements on request.

Does Herco also offer service and maintenance for dairy systems?

Yes. Our flexible after-sales service includes preventive maintenance, spare parts availability and customised service concepts. This ensures the long-term and hygienically perfect operation of your water treatment system.

Water treatment systems
Made in Germany

We have many years of experience in constructing systems, also for complex projects. Adherence to deadlines is our top priority. Our high-quality machinery and systems are tested in the in-house test field to ensure perfect performance - including factory acceptance and instruction of the system operator on request.

DIN certified
and strictly monitored production

In the food sector, regulations such as Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 or Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 must be complied with. Standards such as DIN 10528, DIN 11853 or guidelines such as EHEDG Doc. 28 are used to design water treatment systems in such a way that microbial contamination is prevented or reliably removed. In addition, there are customer-specific requirements, e.g. regarding the brands that can be used. We offer you systems of certified quality (DIN EN ISO 9001, DIN EN ISO 13485), which are planned with these requirements in mind and manufactured by our production team in Germany.

Environmental management system
Listed in the EMAS register

Herco Wassertechnik applies an environmental management system in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 and EN ISO 14001:2015 (sections 4 to 10) to continuously improve its environmental performance, regularly publishes an environmental declaration, has an environmental management system and the environmental declaration audited by an authorised, independent environmental verifier and is entered in the EMAS register (emas-register.de).
