Reference project M.C. Wieninger Private Brewery
50 % less fresh water costs thanks to ultrafiltration of spring water

To address rising drinking water costs, a brewery in southern Germany has opted for an ultrafiltration system from Herco. By utilising spring water as an alternative resource, operating costs have been significantly reduced.

Project requirements

An economical solution was required for the treatment of spring water for cleaning and process circuits - with consistently high operational reliability, best brewing water quality and compliance with hygiene standards.

Herco solution

Herco supplied a type UF2D6 ultrafiltration system including integrated dosing technology for acid, disinfection and caustic. The system was planned compactly, delivered pre-assembled and commissioned in close consultation with the customer.

System technology

  • Membrane process: Ultrafiltration with 0.02 μm pore size - removes particles, bacteria and germs

  • Module technology: Hollow fibre membranes in dead-end operation with automatic backwashing

  • Control system: PLC-based (Siemens S7), fully automatic operation with touch panel

  • Dosing technology: Integrated dosing for acid, alkali and disinfectant

  • System equipment: Pre-assembled unit with backwash tank, pumps and sensors

  • Cost-effectiveness: High filtrate yield (up to 95 %), low energy consumption

  • Area of application: Treatment of spring, surface or process water for process purposes

50 % savings on fresh water costs by using spring water. Up to 95 % filtrate yield due to efficient backwash technology.

Brewery water treatment: Questions & answers

Why is water treatment so important in a brewery?

Water is the main ingredient in beer and, as a technological factor, influences the entire brewing process. Optimal brewing water quality not only ensures the sensory properties of the beer, but also process reliability. Professional brewing water treatment prevents deposits and corrosion and reduces energy consumption.

What types of water are important for brewing water?

Production facilities such as breweries require hygienically perfect product water for beer production as well as technical process water for cleaning, boiler systems and cooling systems. Herco offers customised solutions for all water circuits - optimised for the flow rate, load and requirements of your brewing technology.

Which technologies are used at Herco?

Herco combines various processes - such as softening, ultrafiltration (brewery), reverse osmosis (brewing water) and UV disinfection - to create a customised water treatment system. These technologically sophisticated processes make it possible to transform raw water into consistent brewing water that precisely meets the requirements for brewery water hardness, ion content and microbiological safety.

How does Herco support hygiene and quality requirements?

Herco ensures hygienically safe water in accordance with food regulations. Our systems are designed to comply with the German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV) and international standards. This includes complete documentation - crucial for audits, IFS or BRC certifications and official inspections.

What exactly does ‘full-service provider’ mean at Herco?

As a manufacturer with in-house development, production and installation, Herco supplies everything from a single source. You benefit from an integrated concept - from analysing your water parameters to engineering and technical implementation. Our systems are tested in our in-house test centre and are fully documented. This means: one central point of contact for all water treatment requirements in your brewery.

Are Herco systems also suitable for existing breweries?

Yes - our modular systems are ideal for retrofit projects and modernisation of existing brewing systems. Based on our experience in the food and beverage industry, we can also efficiently bring complex existing infrastructures up to date - with minimum downtime and maximum operational reliability.

How sustainable is water treatment with Herco?

Herco pursues a holistic approach to sustainability. Our systems minimise water and energy consumption, reduce waste water volumes and extend the service life of technical components. With our EMAS-certified environmental management system, we make an active contribution to saving resources in the brewing industry.

Member of VLB Berlin
for strong partnerships

Herco has been a member of the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin e.V. (VLB) since 2022. This strengthens our network in the brewing industry and promotes the exchange of expertise on efficient and hygienic water treatment in breweries.

Water treatment systems
Made in Germany

We have many years of experience in the construction of systems, even for complex projects. Adherence to deadlines is our top priority. Our high-quality machines and systems are tested in our in-house test field to ensure that they function perfectly - with factory acceptance and instruction of the system operator on request.

DIN certified
and strictly monitored production

In the food sector, regulations such as Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 or Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 must be complied with. Standards such as DIN 10528, DIN 11853 or guidelines such as EHEDG Doc. 28 are used to design the water treatment systems in such a way that microbial contamination is prevented or reliably removed. In addition, there are customer-specific requirements, e.g. regarding the products that can be used. We offer you systems of certified quality (DIN EN ISO 9001, DIN EN ISO 13485), which are planned with these requirements in mind and manufactured by our production team in Germany.

Environmental management system
Listed in the EMAS register

Herco Wassertechnik applies an environmental management system in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 and EN ISO 14001:2015 (sections 4 to 10) to continuously improve its environmental performance, regularly publishes an environmental impact statement, has the environmental management system and the environmental statement audited by an authorised, independent environmental verifier and is entered in the EMAS register (emas-register.de).
