Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a major challenge for water treatment due to their high persistence. In a recent technical report published in the technical and scientific journal gwf Wasser, Adrian Haradinaj, Tugay Cerit and Edwin Locker examine the origins, analytical methods and suitable treatment technologies.
The article demonstrates that PFAS enter the water cycle via numerous pathways and that conventional methods are often insufficient. Consequently, specialised technologies such as activated carbon, ion exchange, reverse osmosis and combined treatment approaches are becoming increasingly important. A thorough analysis of water quality and a customised plant design are crucial to ensuring long-term efficiency and operational reliability.
