Herco supports mobile water analysis in South Sudan

07 April 2025

Mobile Water Lab has arrived in South Sudan - a milestone for safe drinking water in a rural region

The mobile water laboratory has reached its destination
An advanced portable laboratory for analysing water quality is now available in the South Sudanese town of Nimule. The project supported by Herco marks a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable drinking water supply in rural areas.

Equipped with fully digital instrumentation and high-precision analysis, the Water Lab enables laboratory accuracy in the open air. In addition to recording chemical and physical parameters, it also offers high-capacity microbiological analysis. This means that potential risks in drinking water can be reliably assessed - a decisive contribution to preventive healthcare.

A strong network for safe water
The partner organisation CAWP (Community Action Water Program, https://cawp-ss.org/) is responsible for operating the laboratory. The employees will be trained shortly afterwards by an experienced specialist to use the modern technology safely and efficiently. The first deployments are already planned: New as well as recently repaired wells, which were constructed as part of a BMZ-funded project, will be inspected.

Thanks to its uniqueness in the region, the Water Lab is expected to play a central role in all upcoming water tests - not only for CAWP, but also for local authorities and other organisations. The aim is to finance the operation of the lab in the long term through fees and thus ensure permanent access to safe drinking water in the region.

Another step towards sustainable water infrastructure
With the mobile laboratory, we are working with our partners to create the conditions for professional and comprehensive water quality monitoring in regions that are difficult to access. It is an example of how a sustainable impact can be achieved through technical precision, targeted project support and regional networking.

Our partners wasted no time and immediately organised on-site training for the use of the new lab
